Right activists in Nepalgunj have staged a sit-in in front of District Administration Office (DAO) in Banke district demanding justice for Nirmala Pant who was murdered after rape in Kanchanpur district in July.
The activists reached the office at around 12 pm and staged an hour-long sit-in on Tuesday. They submitted a memorandum to the government through the DAO and demanded action against perpetrators of the crime. They also demanded the government stop the violence against women.
Speaking at the programme after the sit-in, Chairperson of Mahila Mahab Adhikar Rakshyak Sanjal, Banke, Akshari Pokharel accused the state of trying to protect the accused involved in the rape and murder of Pant.
Protests were held in Nepalgunj against the murder of Nirmala from Bhimduttanagar Municipality in Kanchanpur but ceased afterwards. The protest was resumed with the commencement of 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence.
Banke assistant Chief District Officer Suresh Sunar said the DAO will send the memorandum to the government to address the demand of the activists. He also suggested everyone to work in unison to stop the violence against women.
