Students protest transfer of head teachers

Students staged a demonstration after Birgunj metropolis transferred head teachers of secondary schools of the metropolis, at Ghantaghar in Birgunj today.

The students of Maisthan Bidhya Peeth burnt tyres and chanted slogans against Mayor Bijaya Kumar Sarawagi during the demonstration.

The metropolis had transferred head teachers of eight secondary schools of the metropolis. Students took to the street saying that the move by the metropolis was politically motivated.

Teacher associations have stopped teaching activities in all community schools under the metropolis for two days.

Meanwhile, the metropolis has accused the transferred head teachers of provoking students to start an agitation. One of the transferred head teachers Binod Meheta said he had nothing to do with the students’ protest, adding, “The mayor had no right to abruptly transfer head teachers.”

The head teachers said they were transferred without prior information. Mayor Sarawagi accused head teacher Meheta of provoking students to launch the protest.

Of the 95 community schools in the metropolis,19 are secondary schools. As many as 20,185 students are study in the schools where 752 teachers have been working.
