Govt doctors continue protest against ‘bid to make them bonded labourers’

2019-02-11

Government doctors have continued their protest against the proposed bill to regulate federal civil service.

Expressing its objections to some provisions of the bill which two houses of the government are soon to discuss, the Government Doctors’ Association Nepal (GoDAN) has been carrying out various protest programmes for past few days.

They staged a protest rally from Bir Hospital to the Ministry of Health and Population on Monday. The protesters had carried placards which read that the government was turning them into bonded labourers.

GoDAN President Dr Dipendra Pandey says the protesters have demanded that the doctors be mobilised under the federal government.

They have argued that the government should not doubt the doctors’ desire to serve at the local level as they have been doing so for ages, but they should be kept under the central government as the local ones might be incapable of affording facilities and services to them.

Earlier on Sunday, police had detained more than 20 doctors when GoDAN staged a sit-in at the Ministry.
