A woman was arrested for beating her mother in-law accusing her of practicing witchcraft. Another lady was also arrested for labeling the victim as a witch.
27-year-old Shokmaya Buda Magar of Shantinagar Rural Municipality-4 beat her mother-in-law on February 11. SP Bel Bahadur Pandey of Dang District Police informed Setopati that the daughter-in-law was arrested on the basis of the complaint filed by the victim.
On the basis of the statement given by Shokmaya during the investigation, police arrested 55-year-old Bishnu Shrestha who is known as 'mata', the witch doctor.
According to DSP Prem Bahadur Shahi of Area Police Office, Tulsipur, Shokmaya who was sick, went to Bishnu Shrestha for witchery where Bishnu accused Shokmaya's mother-in-law of casting a spell on her. Bishnu has created an illusion among locals that she can fix illnesses.
According to DSP Shahi, District court has ordered five days detention and the process of prosecution has been initiated according to the Criminal Code against both women.
