All community schools in Ishwarpur Municipality of Sarlahi remained closed on Sunday after some locals thrashed teachers of Janata Secondary School (JSS), Shreenagar.
Nepal Teacher's Association (NTA), Ishwarpur urged the community schools of the municipality to remain shut for a day after the teachers were attacked by some unknown people. On February 13, the school was celebrating Saraswati Puja when some students had a dispute over an issue. Taking advantage of the situation, few persons entered the school and attacked Principal Ramashesh Mahato and teacher Shreenarayan Mahato among others.
Laxmi Baniya, chairperson of NTA, Ishwarpur informed Republica that the shutdown is a protest against the incident. The association has demanded the immediate arrest of the persons involved in the incident and stern action against them. JSS has not been able to resume its classes since the incident that occurred last Wednesday. The attacked teachers have filed a complaint at the Area Police Office (APO), Kasherganj demanding stern action against those involved in the incident. Chairperson Baniya warned to hit the streets with violent protests if the violators are not punished.
The NTA has also urged the responsible authorities to create a peaceful and safe environment for the teachers. Police have expedited investigation into the case.
