Tanahun police today arrested two persons on the charge of practising caste discrimination from Bhimad Municipality. Those arrested are Chet Bahadur Malla and Gita Poudel of the same municipality.
SP Siddi Bikram Shah said the two were nabbed on the basis of a complaint that Suk Bahadur Pariyar of Bhimad was discriminated against at a wedding party nine days ago.
As per the existing law, anyone found guilty of discriminating against any person on grounds of caste may face up to three months in jail and a fine ranging from Rs 3,000 to Rs 30,000. Poudel and Malla had humiliated Suk Bahadur forced out of the wedding party, saying he should have eaten outside the kitchen.
Acting on the case filed by the victim, police are preparing to register a case related to caste discrimination against Poudel and Mallam, said Inspector Manoj Pandey. Various Dalit organisations and Dalit activists condemned the incident and demanded action against the guilty.
