Kathmandu, September 4

Police have forcefully opened a padlock at the Institute of Medicine of Tribhuvan University. The IoM students had recently padlocked the institute’s office raising concerns over various issues including the entrance exam fee for MBBS.

With the opening of its office, IoM has said that the MBBS entrance exam would also be held on September 7. Education Minister Giriraj Mani Pokharel’s secretariat said that the padlock was opened to make sure that the entrance exams were held on the date fixed by the institute.

Minister Pokharel, on Monday, had directed officials of the university to take initiatives for talks with the protesting students. The student unions had padlocked the institute since September 1, calling for a scholarship up to 75 percent in medical education.

The office has been reopened following the ministry’s statement that the National Medical Education Act 2075 was on the verge of being implemented. The bill, however, will not address some demands of the protesting students.
