Women's organizations organize sit-in in Udayapur demanding control of violence against women

WOREC Nepal (Women’s Network Resource Center) and Community Radio Udayapur organized a one-hour sit-in at Loktantrik Chowk, Gaighat to warn the government for its insensitiveness towards the issues of violence against women.

Campaigners have accused the responsible bodies of the state and high- ranking officials for failing to be sensitive even the criminal incidents against women are increasing day by day and the state for failing to analyze the physical, mental, social and domestic violence and discrimination suffered by raped women and adolescents after the incident.

According to the latest statistics of the Nepal Police, the incidents of rape of girls, adolescents, women, murder after rape and sexual violence have increased significantly. Statistics show that 1,221 rape cases were registered during the government's lockdown and there are seven incidents of rape daily and 47 women have been killed due to sexual violence in the last six months.

According to WOREC records, 75 percent of the 319 rape cases from April to August involved children between the ages of two and 18. About 90 percent of the incidents have taken place from acquaintances to their own homes and neighbors. Statistics from state bodies and stakeholders show that both homes and communities are not safe for women and adolescents.

In the program, the organizers have demanded to end all forms of discrimination including exploitation, unequal repression of power, violence and transformation into power relations. They have also demanded to end the practice of covering up the crime and protecting the crime which keeps the morale of criminal high with full compliance with the law. It has further been demanded to put an end to the cumbersome justice system and give high priority to such incidents by implementing the speedy justice system.
