Senior citizens of Madhyapur Thimi Municipality of Bhaktapur on the initiative of Agraj Samaj Nepal picketed the municipal office on November 25 demanding social security benefits as soon as possible. Due to the dispute between Municipality Mayor and Chief Administrative Officer, Madhyapur Thimi Municipality has not been able to distribute the social security allowances around Rs 30 million to senior citizens, single women and people with disabilities in its area since July of the current fiscal year.
Before besieging the municipality, the senior citizens had met the mayor on November 21 and asked him to provide the allowance as soon as possible where he had promised that the distribution of allowances would start immediately after the arrival of the new chief administrative officer of the municipality by November 23.
Chairman of the Agraj Samaj Nepal warned that the struggle would continue on November 26 as well until municipality provides social security. He also informed that the people's representatives and employees did not have the right to violate the constitutional rights of the senior citizens and warned to launch a nationwide agitation if necessary.
