Article on debate and delusion of sexual violence

2021-04-19

Half of the population, who have been dying for thousands of years due to discrimination and sexual violence, are still suffering from a similar fate. The fact that millions of women have fallen victim to such heinous incidents as rape is also an indisputable and cruel truth today.

Apart from rape, workplace harassment, verbal remarks, inappropriate touching and behaviour, and symbolic acts of violence seem as the deeply rooted practices of violence against woman. However, it is also a fact that the glorious historical legacy of strong resistance, movement and achievements against violence and barbarism is illuminating human civilization.

The "Me Too" campaign was only somewhat effective among celebrities and the upper class, the literate with access to social media and the media. This did not affect the level of demand established by any movement. Most of the accused who went public during the campaign in the world and in Nepal did not have to suffer punishment and social exclusion. Restricting the anti-sexual violence campaign and movement to a small scale is a big mistake in identifying the real problem of women's emancipation. A campaign to unite the millions of poor and working women and adolescents who are being subjected to the most brutal forms of violence may create the illusion of an end to sexual violence, but it will not build ideology and movement.

When discussing sexual violence today, it is important to keep in mind the economic, social, cultural and historical context of women from thousands of years to the present. However, the scope of consideration of gender issues and sexual violence against women has become very wide. It is dominated by those who present the immediate solution to partial, immediate and superficial problems as the solution.

As long as there is a class, patriarchal society and system, women cannot be completely free, nor can sexual violence be eradicated. Fighting alone, exposing the victims of sexual violence or attacking the patriarchal mentality alone will not break the huge net of violence and discrimination. The expression of indignation alone does not lead to a solution to the problem, but the awakening and struggle among marginalized, poor and most oppressed women with the right ideology, planning and organization can lead to the destruction of fundamental systemic problems while gaining democratic rights. It only creates the status and environment for women to live with dignity, the populist tendency leaves the task of solving structural problems unattended.
