Jai Singh Dhami, a 30-year-old resident of Byas Municipality-2 in Darchula went missing in the Mahakali river after an improvised cable crossing was reportedly dismantled by a member of India’s Sashastra Seema Bal on July 30. Following the incident, on August 1, ANNFSU's students and youths burnt the effigy of Indian Prime Minister Modi by evading the obstruction of the security personnel in Mahendrangar.
There was a scuffle between the police and the students for some time after police intervened in the protest. Earlier on July 31, a demonstration was held at Gaddachauki on the western border against the incident of making a Nepali disappear in Mahakali. Dhami, to go to Kathmandu for foreign employment tried to reach Khalanga, the district headquarters via the cable crossing of the Mahakali river. The armed SSB had cut off the crossing ignoring the pleas of Dhami's relatives.
