No compensation or justice for Kiran Rai who lost his life in police custody eight years ago

The family of 18-year-old Kiran Rai, who lost his life at the District Police Office eight years ago, has not yet received compensation and justice. Kiran Rai, a resident of  Diktel Rupakot-Majhuwagadhi Municipality-10 who was arrested on June 11, 2013, on the charge of murder, died in custody on July 10,2013. The National Human Rights Commission had recommended action against 11 people including the then DSP Rajiv Basnet and Inspector Ramesh Dev.

Shyambabu Kafle, head of the National Human Rights Commission, Khotang, said that Rs. 300,000 was recommended to compensate the victim's family. According to him, the Office of the Prime Minister and the Office of the Council of Ministers has written to the Ministry of Home Affairs on April 20, 2015, to provide compensation on the recommendation of the commission.

Rajiv Rai, a relative of the victim, said that he did not get justice even though the decision and recommendation of the commission were upheld. Chief District Officer Mitra Lal Sharma said that an inquiry should be held into what happened and why no compensation was paid. The family members have alleged that Kiran Rai died due to a police beating. Police said Kiran died of pneumonia after further tests were carried out.
