2021-09-28

Lumbini, Banke, Nepalgunj

Protests have been staged in Nepalgunj demanding free sanitary pads. The protest was organized in Nepalgunj on Tuesday against the price hike in sanitary pads and demanded free pads from the government. The youths of the district have been protesting with the objective of pressuring the government to create a menstruation-friendly environment.

They marched from VP Chowk with the slogan 'Our contribution to the health sector, free sanitary pad campaign'. Activist Swetha Gurung informed that they handed over the memorandum to the Chief District Officer of Banke, Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Nepalgunj Sub-Metropolis. Gurung said that protests were staged today at the district administration office and at all eight local levels.

As Nepal is a male dominated country, condoms have been distributed free of cost from every health post. However, child rights activist Ankit Mishra said that the protest was against the government's tax hike on sanitary pads, which are much needed by women. Mishra said that the government of Nepal should immediately distribute the pads free of cost. Although the local government said that sanitary pads have been provided in every school, the youths said that they have not received the service facility yet. The protest program was organized by various organizations active in the Kishori Abhiyan. They also demanded that sanitary pads like condoms should be made free.
