Red Cross employees agitated since a week against the committee's decision over work tenure

Bagmati, Kathmandu, Kathmandu

The staff of Nepal Red Cross Society has been agitating for a week condemning the decision of the Nepal Red Cross Society Standing Committee which they claim is against the guidelines of the organization. The meeting of the Standing Committee held last year on December 24 decided to fix the tenure of three years for the Executive Director and 5 years of tenure for the Director. The staff had then registered a complaint at District Administrative Office against the decision, to which the administration had written the Red Cross Society not to implement that decision.

Employees have been agitating after the ad hoc committee started dismissing the executive director and one director from the service contrary to the correspondence of the administration office. It is said that the ad hoc committee has given a sudden leave letter to the executive director Umesh Dhakal and director Dr Manita Rajbhandari.

As per the staff, the standing committee doesn't hold legal status after December 18. The Nepal government had formed a three-member standing committee on July 27, 2020, under the leadership of Netra Timalsina with a mandate of organizing a convention within three months and forming a new working committee.

The tenure of the standing committee was extended for a year by publishing a notice in the gazette paper mentioning that, the general convention could not be organized within 3 months due to COVID. "The tenure was again added for 3 months by High Court as the lockdown was in effect due to the second wave of COVID, which is already over on December 18.", said Bishnu Timalsina, the chairperson of Employee Union.

The staff padlocked the Red Cross office and been staging a sit-in by carrying the placards that read 'Respect the employee structure', Cancel the ghostly made decision' ' Don't break the rules and system', 'Respect the employee guidelines', 'Maintain Chain of Command' among others. However, the chairperson of the standing committee, Netra Timilasina claimed that the tenure of the committee ends only on January 18, 2022.
