RAUTAHAT, April 12: One person was injured in a shootout at Garuda in Rautahat on Wednesday. The injured man was named Gajindar Yadav, the 22-year-old son of Birju Yadav of Laxmipur, Garuda Municipality-5. Yadav, who was injured by a bullet in the arm, was sent to Birgunj for further treatment after first aid at a hospital in Garuda.
In the last local level elections, when Deepak Yadav, a candidate for the post of mayor from Loktantrik Samajwadi Party(LSP), tried to enter the municipal office with his aides, there was a clash between the police and the protestors. At around 2 PM, leader Yadav made a speech against the municipality, the mayor and the chief administrative officer, and was stopped by the police when he was proceeding toward the municipal office. When the police tried to stop Yadav, his supporters started hurling stones at the police, and the police resorted to a lathi-charge.
When the situation became further tense, the police had to fire tear gas shells and also some bullets into the air. About one and a half dozen shots were fired at Garuda with tear gas and bullets.
Seven security personnel, including a police inspector, were injured in the stone-pelting by the protestors. Police inspector Birendra Paswan has been injured.
The police said that Garuda's situation is now normal. LSP leader Yadav went on a hunger strike for eight days two weeks ago with various demands. Despite breaking the hunger strike in agreement with the municipality, the police stopped them when they tried to enter the municipal office with a group of supporters while they were warning to protest demanding more documents.
According to the demand of the agitating Yadav and according to the program of the municipality, Garuda Municipality will hold a public hearing program on Thursday. Yadav has said that he will boycott the program saying that it is not the same as what he said.
