Biratnagar witnessed a demonstration on June 4, against the recent interim order issued by the Supreme Court. The order halted the implementation of the citizenship amendment bill approved by President Ramchandra Paudel.

The bill includes a provision allowing citizenship to be obtained through the mother's name and extends it to the children of those who borne naturalised citizenships. The issuance of citizenship had already started in Jhapa, whereas the Morang and Sunsari district administration also stated of making necessary preparations for issuing citizenships. 

The decision of Supreme Court to halt the process, made youth furious who expected to get citizenship resulting in torch rally of more than 100 youth in Biratnagar. They also obstructed transportation demanding citizenship and expressed concerns over the repercussions of the Supreme Court's decision.
