The 30-party opposition alliance led by the UCPN (Maoist) organised nationwide protest programmes on Saturday, demanding to promulgate the new constitution through political consensus. Despite the severe weather conditions, the opposition parties took out protest rallies that later converged into mass meetings. Speaking at a protest rally in Birgunj, Chairman of Madhesi Janadhikar Forum Nepal Upendra Yadav said that the opposition parties would not accept the constitution prepared by Constituent Assembly (CA) Chairman Subas Nembang. “The ruling parties are hatching a conspiracy to hand over all the rights of the CA to Nembang. We will, by no means, accept the draft presented by him and the government,” he said. Yadav further warned that the public would burn the constitution promulgated without consensus. Addressing a mass meet at Janakchok in Janakpur, Dhanusha, the speakers also demanded a constitution through consensus among major parties represented in the CA. They cautioned of dire consequences if the ruling parties tried to promulgate the statute by a two-thirds majority. Similar protest programmes were organised in several other districts including Saptari, Sarlahi, Okhaldhunga, Tanahun and Nawalparasi.
