Inmates facing difficulties due to space crunch

 The inmates of "B" graded District Prison of Jaleshwor, established in BS 1953 are facing a problem of overcrowding. There are three times more convicts and under trial prisoners kept beyond its capacity. The prison has a capacity to accommodate 135 inmates however there are 408 inmates including 341 male and 22 female inmates and detainees. There are 3 boys and 3 girls dependent. The physical infrastructure of 153 years old building is very poor. There are 10 toilets for male and 2 toilets for women. INSEC district representative Ajaya Kumar Shah monitored the prison on January 8. Most of the inmates complained about the difficulties they faced due to overcrowding. They further said that in winter season it is tolerable to live in such a condition but in summer it will be very difficult for them. Saubhendra Thakur, Chief of the Prison said that the inmates are being given health benefits and other facilities such as daily allowances, flour and medicinal expenses. He further added that the roof of the building leaks during the rainy season and added that the installation of generator to avoid load shedding has been requested.
