2015-01-26

Madhes, Saptari, Rajbiraj

The maternal family of 27-year-old Anupama Sah, found burnt to death under suspicious circumstances, have accused her husband and in-laws for the murder of their daughter. The victim’s family complained that the District Police Office (DPO), Saptari had refused to register their case and investigate into the matter even a week after the incident. Anupama, daughter of Ramananda Sah and Renu Shahi of Rajbiraj -5, had died while being rushed to Dharan after being referred from the Rajbiraj -based Gajendra Narayan Singh Sagarmatha Zonal Hospital. Anupama, who had been found engulfed in flames at her home in Malepur-3 in the district on January 18, had suffered third degree burns. The victim’s father, Ramananda, suspected the hands of his daughter’s husband and in-laws behind the murder as they had not informed them about her death and hastily performed her final rites without conducting an autopsy. The victim had tied the knot with Baijanath Sah, one of the main accused in the case, as per Hindu traditions on April 16, 2012, at Rajdevi temple in Rajbiraj . The marriage was the second marriage of Baijanath, who had earlier been married to one Bina Devi Sah. Baijanath had tied the knot with Anupama after accusing his first wife Bina Devi of failing to give birth during 17 years of marriage. Stating that her husband and in-laws had on many occasion chased Anupama out of the house accusing her of being frigid time and again, and accepted her back only after she gave birth to a child, Ramananda vented his ire at police inaction in the murder case. “I frequent the District Police Office to learn about any developments into the case, but there is no one to listen to our plea and they do not even register our complaint,” complained victim’s brother, Ranjeet. Meanwhile, Deputy Superintendent of Police Kedar Dhakal of the DPO clarified that they had not registered the case “as the police is currently investigating the case”. “We cannot just register the complaint in a homicide case, especially when the victim’s in-laws have been claiming that she had committed suicide,” Dhakal said, assuring that they will proceed as per the law once they complete their investigation.
