The locals of Okharpauwa have yet again barred the Kathmandu Metropolitan City from dumping garbage in Sisdole Landfill Site in Nuwakot. The local residents in association with a local committee of the CPN-UML returned as many as 156 KMC vehicles that were carrying waste and obstructed them from transporting the garbage to the landfill yesterday and today. They alleged that the metropolis had failed to fulfil its commitment regarding upgradation of two secondary schools to higher secondary schools, blacktopping of local roads and providing employment and health facilities to the locals.
The locals also demanded that KMC increase its grant from Rs 10 million to Rs 20 million for the development works. According to the agreement reached with the government in 2005, KMC was supposed to dump garbage in Sisdole Landfill Site for three years and then move to Banchare Danda to use it as a landfill site, which is about one kilometre from Sisdole. However, KMC has been dumping more than 500 tonnes of garbage every day in the landfill site for the past seven years without renewing the agreement. Hari Bahadur Kunwar of KMC said efforts to use Banchare Danda as landfill site had been delayed due to lack of from the government.
