IOM students to boycott classes

2015-03-25

Bagmati, Kathmandu, Kathmandu

Expressing solidarity with the protest launched by Dr. Govinda KC, who is on a hunger strike demanding implementation of agreements the government had reached with him earlier, MBBS students of the Institute of Medicine have announced to boycott all academic activities from tomorrow. The veteran surgeon began his fifth hunger strike on Sunday after ‘the government did not address his demands’. An IOM MBBS student representative, who did not want to be named, told THT, “We have decided not to participate in any academic activities from Wednesday.” The MBBS students will also stage a sit-in on the premises of Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital tomorrow, according to him. The decision was taken after a meeting held between the MBBS students and resident doctors, who have also shown solidarity with Dr. KC’s protest but have decided not to participate in the sit-in, as their involvement may affect patients. “We will be wearing black bands in protest,” Narman Lamichhane, secretary of Nepal Resident Doctors’ Association, said, adding, “But, we won’t halt medical services.” The NRDA has asked the authorities concerned to address demands raised by Dr. KC. It has also warned that the government and the authorities concerned will be responsible for the consequences of ignoring the demands raised by Dr. KC. Dr. Govinda KC, meanwhile, has asked students not to halt academic activities and medical services citing his protest.
