(Update: March 31, 2015) A complaint of caste discrimination was registered in Kalimati Police Office after summoning both sides in the police station. Police yesterday refused to register the case on this matter saying that they would first hear the accused story. When presented with the case, the woman and her relatives first threatened to counter-accuse the Dalit student and his friends with attempted murder but were not successful. After finding out the truth about the discrimination against the Dalit student by the woman, police registered the complaint filed against her.
A Dalit student preparing for MBBS was expelled by his landlady on the basis of his caste. The landlady, Jamuna Bhattarai, who is also a health worker, ousted student, Ganesh Pariyar of Lamjung, although she had already agreed to rent a room in her house in Syuchatar to the student. Based on the agreement Ganesh Pariyar had paid an advance sum of Rs 2500 to the landlady on Saturday. As preparation to shift to the room, he had also bought curtains and carpets for the room on Sunday.
According to Ganesh, after asking his caste the landlady said that she would not allow him to stay in the room any longer. Ishan Chaulagai and three others who had gone to mediate the case were also treated rudely by the lady and her relatives. After the incident, Mr. Pariyar and some Dalit rights activists went to Kalimati Police Office on Monday to file a complaint against the landlady on the charges of caste discrimination. Sahek Bishwokarma, General Secretary of COCAP (Collective Campaign for Peace) said that DSP Rajendra Pratap Dhamala refused to register the case saying that he would forward the case only after hearing the defendant's story on Tuesday. Sahek expressed his disappointment at the police's decision to not register the complaint. He said that according to the law it was mandatory for the police to register a complaint in a serious case like this [regardless of whether the accused has been questioned].
