Man convicted of rape, murder arrested after 14 years

Police have arrested Manoj Khadka of Chandragadhi Municipality-3, Jhapa at Naya Baneshwar on April 3 after 14 years of being convicted for gang rape and murder of a woman. Khadka was accused of being involved in gang rape and strangulation of Sandhya Rajbanshi of the same place on October 15, 2000. He was arrested by the Central Investigation Bureau in the campaign of finding out absconding convicts. Police say Khadka along with Sitaram Basnet and one absconding man had taken Rajbanshi to the jungle in the pretext of a trip and strangulated her after rape in the Charali Jungle. They hanged her body to create an impression of her suicide. Appellate Court, Ilam cleared them of the charges on April 10, 2002 however, the Supreme Court turned over the verdict and sentenced them to life imprisonment on September 14, 2009. Another accused of the incident, Basnet was arrested by the police on December 3, 2014.
