Approximately 200 pregnant and post-partum women in Makwanpur district have been compelled to live under makeshift tents in the aftermath of the April 25 earthquake. As many as 150 pregnant and about 46 post-partum women, all residents of Tistung VDC, are currently living in tents with little food and clothes to keep them healthy and warm. Tistung is among the worst quake-affected VDCs in Makwanpur. A health worker said there were two stillbirths in Tistung on the day of the earthquake. “Pregnant women, new mothers and their children are the most vulnerable because they are not receiving the care they need to be right now,” he said. While premature births have risen in the wake of the earthquake, the number of women and children contracting various diseases has also spiked. Several free health clinics are being organised in the district to offer medical care. Som Maya Syangtan of Tistung -7, who became a mother just two weeks ago, said it would be a huge relief if only the government provided a warm shelter for her and her baby. Most of the houses in Tistung have been damaged by the quake.
