Inmates suffer as quake damages prison building

 The damage caused by the earthquake in Bhojpur prison has added to the woes of the inmates. The district prison which holds three times more inmates than its capacity suffered damages to its wall and building. The April 24 earthquake and aftershocks have rendered the prison building uninhabitable. The male inmates have been transferred to the female ward while the female inmates have been kept at one corner of the building where male inmates were kept. Jailor Hari Krishna Dahal said that the prison sustained severe damage as the building was very old. He said that prison managed for a temporary arrangement, adding that this could not be sustained due to lack of resources. The eastern wall of the prison has collapsed. The police barrack kept for the security of the prison has also sustained cracks. The inmates prepare meals under the open sky. One inmate Govind BK complained that they were staying in a cramped space using tarps to cover them. Temporary toilets have been made. The stench has filled the prison surroundings. Some inmates have taken ill with a cough, fever owing to cold and unmanaged stay, according to the prison administration. The district prison has the capacity to hold 30 inmates with five female inmates. Currently, it holds 70 male and 10 female inmates. The prison building constructed at Dandagaun in district headquarters 20 years ago has not been used for security reasons.
