The National Human Rights Commission ( NHRC ) has asked the government to take legal action against the World Food Programme (WFP) and Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS) for distributing inedible rice to the earthquake victims. NHRC inspected the rice ready to be distributed after children in Kavre district suffered from diarrhea after eating the rice distributed by Red Cross and made available by WFP. During its inspection, the NHRC discovered that the rice was not of substandard quality and unsuitable for consumption. It has drawn the government’s attention towards this issue. “NHRC draws the attention of the government to bring the institutions involved in distributing substandard foods that have a direct connection with the health and life of people under the purview of law and take action,” reads the press statement issued by the commission on Tuesday.
