Memo for Hindu state submitted

2015-07-06

Bagmati, Kathmandu, Kathmandu, Ward 10

‘The Sanatan Hindu Rastra Maha Abhiyaan’, led by Nepali Congress leader Khum Bahadur Khadka, on Monday submitted a memorandum to Constituent Assembly Chairman Subas Nembang, opposing the inclusion of the term ‘secular’ in the preamble of the draft constitution. The campaign members organized a rally from Maitighar to New Baneshwor before submitting the memorandum to Nembang. While submitting the memorandum to Nembang, they argued that the issue of secularism, which was not even raised during the second people’s movement, was incorporated in the Interim Constitution. They also expressed their dissatisfaction over the mention of secularism in the latest draft prepared by the Constitution Drafting Committee. Leader Khadka, also a former home minister, has been spearheading ‘the Sanatan Hindu Rastra Maha Abhiyaan’ (Mega Campaign for Restoration of Nepal as a Sanatan Hindu State), pressing for the establishment of Nepal as a Hindu nation. Prior to leader Khadka, former Speaker Taranath Ranabhat and Laxman Ghimire among other leaders had put forth a similar demand before Nembang. After receiving the memorandum, Nembang said, “I thank you all for coming to the CA debate and submitting the memorandum.”
