2015-08-03

Lumbini, Bardiya, Barbardiya, Ward 9

A woman of Mahadpur, Bardiya district reportedly attempted suicide by burning self on Friday night. Geeta Sekh set herself on fire after sprinkling petrol on herself at home, according to her husband. She is currently undergoing treatment at Nepalgunj-based Bheri Zonal Hospital. Half of her body has been burnt and her situation is critical, according to the police. Her husband, Naumuddin Sekh, had brought a house for his second wife, due to which Geeta was frequently involved in arguments with them. Her sister-in-law, who is tending to her in the hospital, said, "It's common for quarrels to occur in a house where men have two wives. But we do not know the reasons that led to the incident." Police said it is not clear whether this is a case of self-immolation or someone else set her on fire. However, her husband sternly denied the accusation and said his wife set herself on fire. After the incident, Bardiya police have been keeping a close watch on Naumuddin. Chief of District Police Office (DPO) Bardiya, SP Govinda Ram Pariyar informed that investigation is underway. "We are not sure whether she set herself on fire or someone else did. We are investigating the matter," said Pariyar. Although in a critical state, Geeta has confessed self-immolation. She, however, refused to state her reason. Meanwhile, Dr. Suresh Kumar Nath, who is involved in her treatment, said it is not possible to provide medical attention from Nepalgunj due to the severity of her condition and suggested that she be taken to Kathmandu without delay.
