One killed as police open fire at protesters defying curfew

A protester was killed as police opened fire at protesters defying curfew clamped in Birendranagar, the district headquarters, after protests demanding undivided Mid-western region turned violent on Monday. The identification of the deceased is yet to be ascertained and the dead body has been kept at the premises of District Police Office, Surkhet. The local administration had enforced curfew from 1 pm till 9 pm in the evening after agitations demanding undivided Mid-western region and declaring Surkhet as federal capital went out of control. Chief District Officer Baldev Gautam said the incident occurred as the law enforcement agency opened fire in air to maintain order. Protesters at first vandalized the office of Jhupra Drinking Water Project and then marched toward District Administration Office. The mob also set District Development Office, Municipality Office and house of Nepali Congress joint general secretary Purna Bahadur Khadka on fire. According to police, protesters also set ablaze vehicles of Chief District Officer and leader Khadka.
