Curfew issued in Jumla, 13 injured as police open fire

update............ Hari Bahadur Kunwar of Tamti-1, Jumla, who was seriously injured during the protest on August 16 died. Kunwar was undergoing treatment at Maharajganj Teaching Hospital. Unified Maoist leader Dr. Baburam Bhattarai said that Kunwar should be declared a martyr after reaching the hospital.

______ update ... At least 13 protestors were injured in Jumla when police opened fire to take the situation under control on Sunday. Locals in Jumla have been staging protests demanding autonomous Karnali province for the last eight days. Three of the injured -- Hari Kunwar of Tamti-1, Padam Prasad Timilsina of Chandnath-4 and Santosh Budhthapa of Chandnath-3 --are said to be in critical condition. Kunwar received a bullet in his neck while Timilsina and Budhthapa were shot in their abdomen. The injured have been airlifted to Nepalgunj for treatment. After the situation went out of control, the District Administration Office, Jumla has clamped curfew from 5:30 pm, informed Chief District Officer Dependra Raj Poudel. Poudel, however, claimed that he had not issued any order to open fire at protestors. "I had only given orders to fire tear gas shells," said Poudel. Similarly, protesters took government offices in Mugu district under control from 10 am. Various political parties have announced three more days of district-wide protests.
