Demanding a separate Tharuhat province, cadres of an alliance of Madhesi parties staged protests and obstructed vehicular movement at no-man's-land on the Nepal-India border near Jamunaha checkpost, Monday. The protesters even foiled the movement of bicycles, carts, rickshaws and auto rickshaws on both the Nepal and Indian sides the whole day. Nearly 50 lorries have remained stranded at Jamunaha checkpost and Nepalgunj Customs due to the ongoing protest. Protests in these areas intensified from August 13, demanding an autonomous Tharuhat province. Carts, rickshaws and auto-rickshaws, which were heading for Rupaidiha, were forced to turn back. Likewise, outbound vehicles from Rupaidiha went back toward no-man's-land. With vehicular movement halted, members of the general public were forced to walk long distances. Bishnu Giri, n-charge at Jamunaha Police Station, informed that more than 50 lorries have been stranded at Jamunaha checkpost and Nepalgunj Customs due to the continuous strike. "The banda enforcers have been obstructing vehicular movement from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.," said Giri, adding, "Short-haul lorries and other vehicles run early in the morning but long-distance lorries are completely halted." He also said that the banda enforcers are allowing bicycles, auto rickshaws and carts to ply on the road as per their whims. It is easier to reach the customs office from Nepalgunj through these means. But the enforcers have obstructed movement at Jamunaha checkpost. Chief of Nepalgunj Customs, Rajendra Prasad Hamal, informed that around Rs. 45,000 in revenue has been collected daily for the last two days. "A minimum of Rs. 5 million daily is normally collected from the customs," said Hamal. He added that the revenue collected in the last two days was from passengers and their belongings.
