Red Cross ambulance vandalised in Siraha

2015-09-03

Madhes, Siraha, Siraha, Ward 1

The Red Cross Society has urged all parties to respect the work of health care and emergency services, after a group of people threw stones at an ambulance, on Tuesday. It was marked with a red cross emblem. The incident occurred in Choharba of Siraha district, while the ambulance was on its way to Birgunj. This is the fourth Red Cross ambulance, along with several other ambulances operated by other service providers, to be attacked in the ongoing Madhes demonstration, according to a press release by the Nepal Red Cross Society and the International Committee of the Red Cross. The Nepal Red Cross Society said they are extremely concerned about the recent violence. “They must be able to move unobstructed and securely at all times. The ambulance services being operated by other agencies should receive the same treatment. Any misuse of the Red Cross emblem must be prevented" said Dev RatnaDhakhwa, Secretary General of the NRCS. Red Cross has called on parties to exercise restraint and urge them to allow ambulance services to carry out their tasks during demonstrations. “The NRCS and the ICRC appeal to all concerned parties on the ground to respect the neutral and impartial work of the Red Cross and the health care and emergency services for the people in need,” reads the statement.
