2015-09-24

Madhes, Parsa, Birgunj, Ward 2

Media houses and media persons based in Birgunj have become terrorized after series of threats from protesters. Radio journalists urged the protesters to stop harassing and attacking the radio stations and radio journalists. A meeting of the radio journalists held in Birgunj on September 23 following the threats by the protesters regretted the treatment towards them though they were regularly airing materials to establish the rights of the Madhesis. The meeting regretted that the untoward events occurring in reference to the agitation news has disrupted the regular transmission of Radio Birgunj. It also concluded that even the society had a responsibility to protest the radio stations from such attacks when the stations were giving voice to the voiceless for press freedom and democracy. Issuing warning that the transmission of all radio stations would be halted if such attacks in the name of protest do not stop, the journalists said that the agitating parties and the administration would be answerable of such event. They also said that the keys would be handed over the agitating parties and the administration if the attacks continued. The meeting was attended by the representatives of Radio Birgunj, Narayani FM, Indreni FM, Bhojpuriya FM, Radio Tarai, Bindas FM, Akash FM and Birgunj Musical FM. The agitators vandalized Radio Birgunj on September 18, Indreni FM on September 19 and FNJ building on September 20. Meanwhile, FNJ Parsa chapter has condemned the physical attack on journalists and the media houses. It also decided to bring leaders and cadres of agitating parties to damaged FNJ buildings and conduct a discussion on the issue. FNJ Parsa also demanded immediate action against those involved in arson of the FNJ Parsa building. KC Lamichhane
