Six injured in Duhabi clash

2015-10-09

Province 1, Sunsari, Duhabi

At least six people were injured when police opened fire at agitators while escorting passenger vehicles in Duhabi of Sunsari district on Saturday night. Police fired bullets after cadres of the agitating United Democratic Madheshi Front (UDMF) attempted to obstruct vehicles during the escort. Some cadres including United Socialist Forum leader Ranjit Goswami were wounded from splinter injuries when the police opened fire, Goswami informed. Policemen Raj Kumar Shrestha also sustained injury during the incident. "At around 8 pm approximately 200 demonstrators tried to obstruct vehicular movement by pelting empty bottles and slingshots at the vehicles we were escorting. It was dark and we were forced to open fire in self-defense," said Police Inspector Shiva Pokharel of Duhabi. "Although one sustained injury from our side, we have not been informed about the injuries sustained by the demonstrators." Pokharel said agitators remain peaceful throughout the day, but they have been targeting the police at night. "We have been the targets of agitators in Duhabi," he said. Even protesters have admitted to targeting police personnel. A day earlier on Friday night, two policemen were injured when a clash between agitators and the police took place. The East-West Highway has remained shut for the past 57 days due to Terai banda called by UDMF and its supporters. Vehicles are able to operate only during night with police escort.
