Women expelled for not bringing dowry in Banke

2015-12-14

Lumbini, Banke, Duduwa

Two women of the same family in Banke district have been expelled from their homes for not bringing dowry. 24-year-old Tarawati Harijan and her 21-year-old sister Krishnawati of Holiya-9, Kadhaupuruwa of Banke district were taking refuge at their maternal home at Fattepur-1, after they were expelled by their in-laws. Tarawati claimed that her husband Babulal Raidas beat her severely, which compelled her to leave the home. She took refuge at her maternal home since December 14. She was tolerating violence for the last two years. Her younger sister Krishnawati was married to her brother-in-law, Dinesh Kumar. She claimed that her in-laws and husband were disappointed for not bringing Rs 200,000 and a motorcycle in dowry from her maternal home. "They have expelled us five times until now for not bringing dowry," she complained with tearful eyes, adding, "This time my husband tried to hack me with an axe." According to Tarawati, her husband threatened to marry again, if she complained to authority. Krishnawati too complained that she has been compelled to leave her in-laws' home as they always complain of not bringing dowry. Meanwhile, Ram Prasad Harijan, the victims' father, said that he would file a lawsuit against both of his sons-in-law and their family for expelling his daughters for not bringing dowry. Superintendent of Police (SP) Basanta Panta, chief of the District Police Office, said that the police will investigate the incident once the complaint is filed.
