Dalit woman beaten for touching water pipe

A Dalit woman has been beaten for touching the water pipes in Tokha Chandeshwori Kotal ward 6 of Kathmandu. Kamala Nepali a long time resident of the area was in a dispute with Shanta KC of the same place over filling water at a tap near Shanta's house for some time. Shanta was staying at a house near Kamala's house after her house was destroyed during the earthquake. But in the last few days, Shanta had attempted to deny water to Kamala saying that she belonged to a low caste. Kamala was beaten over the same dispute. Kamala who was injured due to the beating underwent treatment at Grande Hospital. Meanwhile, Shanta KC and her husband who were allegedly involved in beating Kamala were released Tokha police after a brief interrogation. Police have initiated a further investigation into the incident by arresting Shanta and her husband after family and relatives of the victim - Kamala reported the incident to inspector Tanka Prashad Bhattarai of Chakrapath Police under the initiative of Dalit rights activist Saru Sunuwar.
