Food Crisis Looms Large in Nine VDCs of Darchula

2016-03-08

Nine VDCs of the district are at the risk of facing a food crisis, according to the Food Security Counteraction Plan. The long drought that affected the production of winter harvest is creating a food crisis in the villages. A Food Security Counteraction (FSC) Plan has been prepared in the initiation of the District Agriculture Development Office (DADO) in order to face the food crisis. The plan, which was prepared after group discussions with concerned agencies with help from the World Food Program, has been approved by District Council at the policy-level. DADO said that the plan was prepared to face the food crisis in a sustainable manner on the basis of different indicators. Thus, Khandeshwori, Guljar, Sitola, Earkot, Rapla, Guljar Hikila, and Spiti villages are kept under the villages with food insecurity. Planning Officer of DADO Mahesh Chandra Joshi said that the plan was prepared as it is expected that there would be a reduction of food production from 15-20 percent in the district. These villages would be hit hard by food shortage. The FSC Plan will categorize villages as high, medium, and low food insecure after finding the condition of food production, food stock, employment opportunities, natural disaster, and child malnutrition. Barren land, drought and lack of irrigational infrastructure, lack of access to market, and non-connection with a network of transport have been taken as main challenges of food security. Joshi said that a strategy has been prepared to improve the situation of food security by mobilizing social and natural capital and commercializing the agriculture sector.
