Locals of Rasuwagadhi staged a protest against the government's decision to acquire land to construct a dry port at Timure in Rasuwa district.
On Thursday, the locals at Rasuwagadhi disrupted movement along the highway that links Kathmandu with China.
According to the agitating locals, the price ceiling of the land fixed by the government is too low. They have demanded the government to provide them land elsewhere or to give proper compensation. The protest is being carried out under the leadership of Dorje Tamang.
"We have been compelled to protest against the local authority after the administration failed to respond to our queries about compensation schemes," Karma Tamang, a local of Rasuwagadhi, said.
As per an estimate, nine hectares of land is required for the dry port. Out of the total nine hectares, some three hectares (54 ropanis) of the land have to be acquired from the locals.
Meanwhile, Chief District Officer (CDO) of Rasuwa, Krishna Prasad Adhikari, said that the district administration office cannot fulfill their demands. "Genuine demands can be addressed, but all of their demands cannot be met," he said. "If we fail to manage the required land, the Chinese authorities might stop the project. Hence, we have reached to the conclusion that we need to make this project happen at any cost."
The dry port is expected to minimize the increasing loss of trade between Nepal and China. China has pledged to build the Timure Frontier Inspection Station under a turnkey project and hand it over to Nepal.
