Qatar grants amnesty to 21 Nepalis

The Qatari government has granted amnesty to 21 Nepali nationals serving prison terms on various charges. The mass pardon was extended by Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani on the occasion of Eid. It has also waived the fine amounting to 200,000 riyals (around Rs 5.6 million) of two Nepalis doing time for drug trafficking. Ganesh Bahadur and Achyut Darasi had been doing time at Quatrain jail since 2013 July after being sentenced to three years with a fine of 200,000 riyals each. According to a spokesperson for the Nepali Embassy in Qatar Nitish Sapkota, besides Ganesh Bahadur and Darasi the amnesty was granted to Samim Ansari, Dal Bahadur Bishwokarma, Rafil Mohammed Duniya, Tapeshwor Barhi, Arshad Kenti, Prem Sundas Darji, Mohan Bahadur Baniya, Yubaraj Khada, Santa Kumar Rai, Dinesh Karki, Raj Kumar Rai, Mohan Limbu, Guna Hari Pun, Kamal Kumar KC, Dilliram Bhandari, Adiraj BK, Suman Pun, Sarendra Ghimire, and Ram Prasad Chaudhary. The convicted Nepalis had been serving time on various charges, including theft, rape, fraud. “All of them will be deported to Nepal after necessary paperworks,” said Sapkota.
