A protester, who was injured in police firing during Madhes protest three months ago, succumbed to injuries on Sunday morning in the course of treatment. 50-year-old Sekh Mahiruddin, a permanent resident of Akolawa VDC-5 in Rautahat, died at Narayani Sub-regional Hospital in Birgunj, police said. The death brought the toll in the ongoing Tarai protest in the district to three and more than 50 across the country. Mahiruddin had sustained bullet injuries in his private parts in Gaur, the district headquarters of Rautahat, during a protest on October 14, 2015. Half a dozen protesters and some security personnel were injured during a clash between Samyukta Loktantrik Madhesi Morcha cadres and police turned violent. Having undergone treatment in Kathmandu in the immediate aftermath of the incident, Mahiruddin had returned home. However, his family members took him to the Birgunj hospital last week after his condition deteriorated suddenly. “Mahiruddin sustained bullet injuries during Madhes protest. He breathed his last during treatment,” confirmed Chief District Officer Narahari Baral. Earlier, Raj Kishwor Thakur of Mathiya and Shekh Tabarej of Tejapakad had succumbed to bullet injuries they sustained in the Madhes protests.
