Accused of alleging witchcraft sentenced for six months

District Court of Udayapur has ordered to sentence Meena Kumari Tamang,26 of Bhalayadada VDC-3 for six months with the penalty of Rs 5,000 on June 12 on the charge of alleging 51-years-old Amri Maya Tamang of being a witch and misbehaving in a public place. A single bench of District Court judge Raj Kumar Koirala has convicted Tamang and given his verdict regarding the case.

In the same case, other two accused 32-year-old Sun Maya Tamang and Gaurab 27-year-old Bahadur Tamang were acquitted by the court. The court had ordered to remand Gaurab Bahadur in custody and Meena Kumari and Sun Maya were released on a bail amount of Rs 14,000 each on 2016, January 24. The accused had misbehaved the victim alleging her of being a witch on January 1. The victim’s family had lodged a complaint at District Police Office on January 3. Since that incident, the victim was displaced from the village and living with her relatives in Triyuga Municipality-3.
