Thousands gather at Maitighar in support of Dr KC

(Update)Thousands of protestors have gathered at Maitighar in support of Dr. Govinda KC, who has been staging a fast-unto-death for the last 14 days, demanding reforms in the medical education sector on Saturday afternoon. Dr. KC, a senior orthopedic surgeon at the TUTH, has put forth his four-point demands including the impeachment of Chief Commissioner of the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) Lokman Singh Karki. He has also demanded that all seats at medical universities run by the government be made free, at least one government medical college be established in all the federal provinces, no affiliation be given to any medical, dental, or nursing college in Kathmandu Valley for the next 10 years, and fee ceilings be implemented from this year as fixed by the Ministry of Education, the universities and Nepal Medical Council. Likewise, Dr. KC has demanded the recall of the bill tabled at the Parliament to turn the Manmohan Medical College into an academy and the implementation of past agreements.

(Updated)---At least 10 supporters of Dr. Govinda KC were injured when police lathi-charged them in Tangal of Kathmandu Sunday morning. Scores of doctors, nurses, medical students, social activists, and the general public had gathered in front of the headquarters of the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) to protest against CIAA chief Lokman Singh Karki. Those arrested are Dr. Badri Aryal, Dr. Sagar Pokharel, Pukar Bam, Avinash Basnet, Paras Rawat, Niraj Siddique, Bikram Oli, Padamraj Joshi, Bishwas Dahal, and Gyanendra Niraula. Four protesters including Bidushi Dhungel, who were injured in the police action have been admitted to different hospitals. Dr. KC, a senior orthopedic surgeon at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH), is on a hunger strike for 14 days with various demands. One of his demands is the impeachment of CIAA Chief Commissioner Lokman Singh Karki.
