Locals of Shankharapur municipality in Kathmandu district have padlocked the office of the municipality today in protest of the report made by the Local Body Restructuring Commission. The report has proposed annexation of Shakharapur municipality into Kajeshwori Manohara municipality, against which the locals here have qualm as they say it wipes out the extinction of Shankharapur which is of historic, cultural and archaeological significance. Locals say that legend has it that King Shakhardev had set up human settlement in the conch shape with seven villages and a thousand of homes in this place before human made settlements in Kantipur city in the Kathmandu Valley. Locals, forming a 25-member committee, have been protesting against the report since it was submitted to the government. They have not only padlocked the Shankharapur municipality but all its VDCs offices during the first office hours, shared a local Pawan Lal Shrestha. Parliamentarian Deepak Prasad Kuinkel ranted that the government should acknowledge the importance of such a historical place like Shankharapur municipality and preserve it rather than threatening its extinction. Shankhara municipality borders with places like Patap and Naglebhir of Sindhupalchowk district. Parliamentarian Kuinkel argued that the population alone should not be considered criteria for demarking a municipality in a geographically remote place like in Sindhupalchowk. The padlock will not be unlocked until the report's recommendation is revoked, reaffirmed Rupesh Lal Shrestha, coordinator of the Committee formed to exert pressure on the government.
