Locals encircle NEA after weeks of power cut

2018-07-17

Province 1, Udayapur, Triyuga

After being compelled to stay without electricity for three weeks, locals of Triyuga Municipality, Khaijanpur encircled the office of the National Electricity Authority (NEA) here Tuesday accusing NEA of not repairing a damaged transformer. Locals have been deprived of electricity since June 24. More than 150 villagers gathered outside the NEA’s office at Gaighat at around 9 am and encircled the office to prevent staffers from entering the office. However the staffers managed to get inside using a back door. According to ward chief Ghaman Singh Khatri, people had to live through the summer heat without fans in lack of electricity. The people resorted to demonstration as the NEA did not take initiatives to repair the damaged transformer. Triyuga Municipality had written to the NEA to repair the transformer and the mayor and the chief district officer had repeatedly nudged the NEA to resume power supply but to no avail. “We had informed the NEA about the power disruption on time but they did not act on our complaints, and later they told that the transformer had broken,” said local Shyam Narayan Chaudhary. Later, after talks between the NEA officials and the protesting locals, NEA agreed to repair the transformer and restore power supply as soon as possible, Wednesday by latest.
