The relatives of 19-year-old Bikram Bhattarai and Alice Basnet from Rupakot Mujhuwagadi Municipality-4, who drowned in Khotang river on Saturday, have staged a peaceful procession at Diktel Bazaar demanding compensation. They were studying over-sear at Diktel Technical Institute. Along with procession some of the shops in Diktel bazaar were closed by the protesting party on Sunday.
They have also collected signatures in front of the administration demanding compensation and action. After the negotiation at District Police Office regarding the compensation amount didn't come to an agreement, then the victim's side started the procession. According to Keshav Kumar Katuwal, Police Inspector, when the Director of the technical institute said he could not compensate the amount demanded by the victim's side, the negotiation remained inconclusive.
According to Binod Basnet, the maternal uncle of the deceased Basnet, the victim demands are the reasonable compensation should be given, free education to the deceased's brother and sister at the technical institute, to raise funds in memory of the deceased and so on.
Chief District Officer Bishnu Hari Upadhyaya said that another dialogue is being initiated with the principal of the technical institute and victim side to solve the problem. Post-mortem of the deceased has not been done due to protests by the victim's side. According to Dilli Rai, Ward Chairperson of the Khalle, preparation is going on to hold a discussion in the presence of Rajan Bhattarai, father of the deceased Bhattarai and Indra Bahadur Basnet, father of deceased Basnet.
They were drowned while swimming in the river when they were taken to Sapsu Kalika Hydropower for a practical visit. According to Police, while trying to rescue Bhattarai, Basnet also lost his life.
