Police arrested 30-year-old, Deepak Raut on the charge of raping a 14-year-old girl he had 'married'. Raut, a permanent resident of Rajbiraj-14, Saptari, was living at Biratnagar-14. The minimum legal age of marriage in Nepal is 20 years. According to the Civil Code, the age of consent is 18 years, sexual relationship with people under the age of 18 is considered a crime.
According to DSP Ghanshyam Shrestha of District Police Office, Morang, Raut was arrested on the basis of the complaint filed by the victim's family mentioning that the girl is only of 14 years of age.
The girl's family had filed a missing person complaint at Area Police Office Rani on February 18. Police arrested Raut from Tilganga area in Kathmandu-9 with the coordination of Metropolitan Police Circle, Gaushala. Police have initiated investigation against the accused under the rape case.
