Lumbini, Nawalparasi West, Pratappur, Ward 8
Sugarcane farmers, on December 17, have padlocked Indira Sugar Mill of Pratappur-8, West Nawalparasi demanding the payment for their crop. The protest was held after the mill failed to release the payment of around Rs1.1 million to sugarcane farmers, who had supplied the crop for more than a year. Chairman of Sugarcane Producers farmers committee, Umesh Chandra Yadav, said the sugarcane mill also had not paid the payment since 2017 AD.
The protest launched by farmers has prevented the mill from sending sugar to the market. They have also threatened to take control of the sugar stored in the mill and padlock the factory if the payment is not released immediately. Surendra Gupta, managing director of Indira Sugar Mill, said they are unable to pay the payment to farmers as the produced sugar was not sold in the market.
