The all-party struggle committee enforced a general strike in Sarlahi on Wednesday demanding to upgrade of dilapidated postal road and opening of main checkpoints of Nepal-India border after their 10-day long consecutive sit-in was ignored by the local government.
They have been staging a sit-in since December 6. Federal MPs, state MPs and municipal chiefs also participated in the demonstration. They chanted slogans against the government, demanding immediate construction of the postal road and ease of entry into the main border with India.
Due to the strike, markets and shops in the southern region were not open and public transport could not run, they did not allow the school to come into operation. The construction work of postal road has not started even though a contract was signed to the black paper within five years and people are forced to suffer from dust in the winter and mud in the rains.
