Two persons were injured when police fired shots to control a tense situation in the wake of an accident-related death in Kailali's Lamki today.
Twenty-two-year-old Kamala Devkota of Lamkichuha Municipality died when she was knocked down while walking on the roadside by a passenger bus heading to Tikapur on the East-West Highway at Lamki Chowk this morning. As the locals took to the street to protest the death, blocking the road and picketing the local police office, police used force to take the situation under control.
The injured have been identified as Krishna Pyakurel, 30, and Dipak Sanjyal, 18, of Lamki. They are undergoing treatment at Kohalpur Hospital. While Dipak's condition is said to be normal, Krishna's condition is said to be critical. He has received a bullet in his abdomen.
According to Inspector Hikmat Thapa of District Police Office, police had to fire shots in the air to disperse the demonstrators as tension had escalated. "As tension grew, police had to fire warning shots and a few tear gas shells," he said.
Police have seized the bus and detained its driver for further investigation.
