A clash took place between locals and police in Belaka Municipality of Udayapur over the issue of the leasehold forest injuring 10 people. Locals have been agitating since the government of Nepal decided to create a leasehold forest in 176.23 hectares of Koshitappu in Belaka Municipality-3 on May 20.
Hundreds of locals from Wards 3, 8, and 9 of the Belka Municipality had come to picket the municipality after Nilhari Kafle, the director of Barah Herbal and Agro Pvt. Ltd., Sunsari, tried to remove them. Local journalist Lalit Chamling Rai informed that the police fired 25 rounds of tear gas and fired 10 rounds in the air after the protesters started pelting stones at the Municipality. Protestors shattered the glass in front of the Municipal Office and the vehicle carrying the Chief Administrative Officer.
